The UI LGBT Resource Center , WRAC , GLBTAU and others are sponsoring a Trans Week remembrance and celebration starting Friday, November 13. Some details from the UI Master Calendar of Events follow: Transcending the Wall: an Exhibition of Trans-Identified Artists Location: LGBT Resource Center Date: Friday, November 13, 2009 Time: 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM This exhibition marks the first time trans-identified artists have the opportunity to showcase their work in the same space in Iowa City. Photography, sculpture, and other mixed-media work will be on display at The UI Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Resource Center (LGBTRC), starting with the opening reception on Friday November 13th. “Transcending the Wall” is a symbolic title that captures the idea that trans-identified artists have multiple walls to transcend – from academic ivory towers to interpersonal and structural barriers. Finding a space to explore trans identities is a daunting task that can be engaged through artistic endeavors. All of the artists in this exhibition self identify as transgendered, and are proud to showcase work for the general Iowa City community and The University of Iowa campus. Still Black: A Portrait of Black Transmen, Film Screening & Discussion Location: LGBT Resource Center Date: Tuesday, November 17, 2009 Time: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM STILL BLACK: a portrait of black transmen, is an alternative feature-length documentary that explores the lives of six black transgender men living in the United States. Through the intimate stories of their lives as artists, students, husbands, fathers, lawyers, and teachers, the film offers viewers a complex and multi-faceted image of race, sexuality and trans identity. Following the film, rhetoric faculty member and well-known author, Vershawn Young, will facilitate a discussion exploring race and gender performativity. Reveling in an Expansive Space: A Celebration of Trans Identities Location: Pentacrest and Macbride Hall Auditorium Date: Friday, November 20, 2009 Time: 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM A candlelight vigil will precede the celebration on the Pentacrest at 6 pm, followed by the celebration in Macbride Hall Auditorium at 7 pm. The Celebration will include: Lecture by Kate Bornstein (www.katebornstein.com) Kate Bornstein is a nationally recognized speaker, author, playwright, and performance artist. Ze will kick off our Friday night event with a lecture revolving around the value of transgender experience that celebrates life beyond a gender binary. Performance by Coyote Grace (www.coyotegrace.com) Seattle-based folk band comprised of Joe Stevens, a transman singer/songwriter and activist, backed up by Ingrid Elizabeth on vocals and upright bass. Personal narratives from trans-identified people about their experiences living in Iowa City and poets/spoken word artists.
